Sauce (2012) for Chamber Ensemble
Sauce is a piece for chamber ensemble that explores my interest in jazz and funk. I approached the piece with three stipulations: 1) it has to have a beat, 2) it needs to be short, and 3) try to make it fun to play. The work employs the agile leaping ability of woodwinds and couples it with funk and swing grooves provided by double bass and drum kit. A middle section switches these roles, giving a melodic duet to the double bass and vibraphone. The work closes on the honky funk that opened the piece.
