The Art is Loss – Text by Don Bogen (Recording)

The Art is Loss (Have To) is a work composed of two continuous movements for six players. The first movement is an introductory movement for piano quintet that rotates around a few basic pitches and rhythmic gestures. This material ultimately grows into large harmonic blocks that eventually become melodic gestures that flow directly into the second movement. The piece now grows out of Don Bogen’s poem “Have To,” which combines with material from the previous movement to form a texture of division and decay. The work’s title is a line from Bogen’s “Bagatelles,” which, along with “Have To,” are found in his book An Algebra.
