Introspec was the first piece to incorporate a new technique of pitch organization found in two other recent compositions of mine. These other pieces are Methods and Interludes and Piano Trio. In Introspec, the work uses one division of the aggregate into groups of eight and four to create a pitch cycle that dictates most of the piece. This pitch cycle is explored throughout the piece by beginning with the most basic iteration and slowing it down to show its inner workings, which are also comprised from the same cycle. The cycle’s parts are created from a series of trills that slowly emerge to close the piece.
